Biography

Henry Aubin writes about the city/region of Montreal. Since joining The Gazette in 1973, he has been an investigative reporter, editorial writer and, since 2001, full-time columnist.

He received a B.A. in English at Harvard University and studied law for a year at Université Laval on a Canadian Bar Association fellowship for journalists. He is a former reporter with the Washington Post.

Aubin has been vice-president of the Fédération professionnelle des journalistes du Québec and was co-founder of the Centre for Investigative Journalism/Centre pour le journalisme d'enquête (precursor of the Canadian Association of Journalists).

He has won three National Newspaper Awards (twice for investigative reporting and once for editorial writing) and three National Business Writing Awards (in the 1970s).

He is the author of:

- City for Sale/Les vrais propriétaires de Montréal (1977), a bestselling exposé of Montreal land ownership.

- The Rescue of Jerusalem: The Alliance between Hebrews and Africans in 701 BC (2002), which received the Canadian Jewish Book Award for history and the Quebec Writers' Federation Award for non-fiction.

- Who's Afraid of Demergers? The Straight Goods on Québec's Megacities (2004), a compilation of columns on the merger of Montreal Island.

- Rise of the Golden Cobra/L'Ascension du Cobra d'ôr (2007), a historical novel for young adults that received the Silver Nautilus Book Award (U.S.). It was also an Africana Book Awards Honor Book (U.S.) and a Skipping Stones Honor Book for Older Readers.

He is also co-author of Questions d'éthique: Jusqu'où peuvent aller les journalistes? (1991), a book on journalism ethics produced by the Fédération professionnelle des journalistes du Québec.

He and his wife have four grown children.

The Tremblay administration has given conditional support this month to the city getting its first legal druginjection site - a clean, well-lighted place inside of which drug users could shoot up cocaine, heroin or anything else, with a nurse on hand to supervise. Indeed, city hall wants three - count 'em, three - such sites. Plus, for good measure, a large van could travel around the city offering the same service to a less mobile clientele.
